Introducing Waste to Zero: The Global Initiative for Waste Decarbonization. With waste generation projected to increase by 50% by 2050, the need to address waste management environmental impact is paramount. Emissions from the sector are estimated to contribute to at least 3% of world GHG emissions, and represent to ecosystem degradation, resource scarcity and public health risks. Launched in the context of the Year of Sustainability, Waste to Zero aims to formalize waste management practices and engage stakeholders worldwide to decarbonize the sector, unlock economic opportunities, and contribute to global climate change mitigation efforts.
With over 50% of solid waste produced being disposed of or burned illegally every year, the world is creating a long-term environmental liability. Enhancing industry practices will generate economic, social and environmental benefits worldwide.
As the first global initiative to address waste management, Waste to Zero sets a precedent to align the sector with the Paris Agreement. It catalyzes a coordinated shift to decarbonized operations to curb CO2 and methane emissions, achieving a reduction potential of 1.8 GtCO2-eq as per the last IPCC report.
Transitioning from "waste to circular resource management" is our ambition. By doing so, our economies and natural ecosystems will sustain their development, and unlock the potential for massive investment into new business models and jobs creation.
As a global coalition, Waste to Zero welcomes all institutions, from both the public and private sectors, to join the Initiative in order to:
Implement net zero targets through action on Scope 1 to 3 emissions
Invest in decarbonized waste management investment cases
Attract and access to international investment
Build credibility and visibility around your commitments
Access the largest network of committed institutions
Deliver impact through data and technologies
will contribute directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations (UN) and the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
As we prepare to host COP28, the UAE is keen to play a stronger role in driving global climate action by reducing emissions and contributing to the goals of the Paris Agreement, mitigating climate change effects and protecting the planet. Our partnerships with major players are a key pillar in delivering the UAE's climate commitments and achieving Net Zero by 2050.
This MoU is an important step in consolidating our efforts to address climate change. Through 'Waste to Zero', we hope to create a platform for dialogue, raise awareness, and drive actionable solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector. Together with our partners, MOCCAE and Roland Berger, we look forward to inspiring change and creating a more sustainable and prosperous future.
Through this initiative, we aim to highlight the importance of finding solutions to the decarbonization of the waste management sector, which is one of the major sources of global emissions, and to empower economies to make the most of their resources. The initiative is part of our commitment to finding innovative and sustainable solutions, and are aimed at enhancing our potential for transforming the global waste crisis into an opportunity for growth, renewal and resilience.
